JOBS, JOBS, JOBS

“If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.”

~ Steve Jobs, Co-Founder, Apple, Inc (and lots of jobs)

As your Congressman, I will work to enhance the job creating environment for innovators, inventors and new entrepreneurs. Notice this video from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation:

My first job was created from scratch.  In Fairfax County a minor had to be 14 years old and 8 months before qualifying for a work permit.  That wasn’t good enough for me.  I picked myself up, started knocking on doors and offered my neighbors a lawn mowing service.   Though I didn’t have a lawn mower I did earn their trust and their business.  Oh and I earned few dollars as well.

Many politicians have “plans” for job creation but there is an unavoidable truth that I will share with you:

Government does not create viable jobs.  You do.

Over the nearly 25 years since I mowed lawns for a living, I’ve worked in retail (Toys R Us) in Annandale, banking in Annandale, Accounting in Falls Church, Tysons and DC and recruiting in Reston.   As opposed to the life experiences of the expected competitors to represent your 8th Congressional district of Virginia, I have lived through various jobs and industries.  I have had the unique opportunity to help people find jobs as a Recruiter between 2006 and 2009; one of the toughest job seasons in our generation’s history.

Looking someone in the eye who was just starting out or had a family or couldn’t retire and promising you would help find them a job was a tangible responsibility.  It wears on you, it worries you and it should bother you until they succeed.  This is the kind of experience more politicians need to have in this job challenged economy.

Experience in private industry, finding jobs for others and knowing to let private industry create jobs MATTERS.
